Description:

Wellington Compressor Station is located in Medina County, Ohio, south of Cleveland. The original station provided storage and withdrawal service for two separate fields, using seven gas engine compressor units. A new service contract required addition of a simultaneous transmission capability. The Wellington Horsepower Addition project consisted of replacement of the original units with two new 4500 HP electric motor-driven reciprocating compressor units with individual control systems. This also required installation of a new compressor building, unit and yard piping, fire valves, gas coolers, filter/ separator units and yard lighting.

The work had to be accomplished on schedule, so that the new units could provide the required storage service, while the old units were being demolished. Construction was carried on within the limits of the station yard, while the original building was still in place.

Each compressor is configured to provide both storage and transmission service simultaneously, with cylinders switching from low to high stage service as required. This gives capacity ranges from 30 to 180 MMscfd.

The units’ control systems provide normal startup, shutdown and safety monitoring. Additionally, they monitor motor and compressor loading to balance deliveries to transmission and storage services, adjusting cylinders dedicated to each service.
