Description:

Marathon Ashland Petroleum asked Augusta Engineering & Design, Inc. to engineer and design 15 structural steel access platforms, complete with concrete foundations. Augusta personnel were responsible for writing the construction specifications, complete with bidding instructions, which were then turned over to the Marathon Ashland Purchasing Department for issuance. Augusta Engineering reviewed the construction design packages with the contractors before they were released for installation. Augusta then evaluated the contractor’s bids then released them to MAP for final approval and selection. Augusta Engineering was requested to review final acceptance of contractor’s work, as to quality, meeting project objectives, making a punch list of items for the contractor to complete before final turn over and acceptance. Additionally, one of Augusta’s Lead Project Engineer’s in the Civil/ Structural Department handled the office checking of the detailed drawings and performed the field review and inspection in order to insure compliance by construction in meeting the design criteria specified on contract drawings and documents.

This project work required that construction packages were documented for fabrication by outside vendors and installation was performed by on-site contractors. Consideration for the engineering and design was to keep the units running while the work was completed. Platforms were built around and over refinery equipment and tanks. The elimination of issuing contractor change orders helped to managed cost control which thereby reflected in the quality of the job.

The project required a Project Manager, one Civil Engineer and two (Senior) Designers for a period of six months. The project was completed in December of 2003.
